Title case vs. sentence case: the actual difference
Title case capitalizes most major words, while small connecting words (a, the, of, and, in) stay lowercase unless they open or close the title. It's the standard style for book titles, movie titles, and formal headlines: "The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog."
Sentence case capitalizes only the first word of the sentence (plus any proper nouns), leaving everything else lowercase, the same way ordinary prose works: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." It's the default style for news headlines at many major outlets, modern app UI text, and APA-style reference list entries.
Which one you should use usually isn't a personal preference. If you're writing for a publication or organization with a style guide, that guide decides. AP style, for instance, calls for sentence case in most headlines. Chicago and traditional book-title conventions lean toward title case.
When each case style is actually useful
- UPPERCASE: short labels, acronyms, occasional emphasis. Rarely appropriate for anything longer than a few words.
- lowercase: normalizing messy data, like a spreadsheet export where capitalization is inconsistent across rows.
- Title Case: headlines, formal titles, book and movie names.
- Sentence case: body text, modern UI copy, casual headlines, APA reference entries.
A common real use: fixing accidental caps lock
One of the most frequent practical reasons people reach for a case converter has nothing to do with style guides. Someone typed an entire paragraph with caps lock on by accident, and retyping it is slower than pasting it through a lowercase (or sentence case) converter and fixing the capitalization from there.
