The current limits
Free X accounts are capped at 280 characters per post, the same limit that's been in place since 2017. X Premium subscribers get a much larger ceiling, up to 25,000 characters in a single post, though most of the platform's culture and reading habits still favor short, punchy posts even when the limit allows more.
Why thread splitting is harder than it looks
Manually breaking a long piece of writing into 280-character chunks sounds simple until you actually try it. Splitting mid-sentence looks sloppy. Splitting mid-word is worse. And once you've split correctly, you still need to number each post so readers can follow the sequence and know how many are coming.
Doing this by hand for anything longer than a few posts is genuinely tedious, and it's easy to miscount characters when URLs, mentions, and emoji are all counted differently than plain text (a URL, regardless of its actual length, counts as a fixed number of characters toward the limit).
What automatic splitting handles for you
